The ongoing strike at state mortuaries in Pretoria and Johannesburg took a new twist with allegations that cleaners and drivers have been doing autopsies for the past ten years.

A “furious” Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, immediately ordered an inquiry to investigate the allegations.

In the meantime, relatives are waiting for the release of deceased family members to bury them, but the backlog is increasing daily given the large number of unnatural deaths in Gauteng.

Apparently, the health department paid more than R5 million to 25 injured and/or sick staff members. Some employees have been on sick leave for more than 400 days.
