Take the land without compensation, the constitution is getting in the way. Zulu

It’s time to change the constitution in areas where it doesn’t suit the ANC’s purposes, according to minister Lindiwe Zulu.

Minister of small business development Lindiwe Zulu has added her voice to the ‘land without compensation’ drive seen among some in the ANC who have realised that they’ve been doing next to nothing for the last few years and risk losing even more support if they don’t get a solid PR strategy in place in the run-up to the 2019 general election.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Durban – lol – on Wednesday, Zulu said the law is preventing the redistribution of land to black people – because it has nothing to do with inept government departments handing out land to their mates instead of the people who’ve been on waiting lists for years –.

According to Zulu, Jacob Zuma has given orders that the ANC must speed up the process of land redistribution, but the law is getting in the way.

“There’s nothing wrong with changing the constitution where it’s not helping you – where we need to change it, we will change it. Our people are not going to forgive us if we prolong this thing,” Zulu said, forgetting that to change the constitution the ANC would need a two-thirds majority and at the rate the party is pissing off its Tripartite Alliance partners the SACP and Cosatu, that majority is nothing more than a pipe dream.

“Radical economic transformation – what does that mean? Ownership of the means of production. What does that mean? Bringing black people into the space of the bigger economy of South Africa.”

But what does that mean, minister? What’s the plan, what are you going to physically do to achieve what you just said? Throwing labels around doesn’t make it so…

Since the coup that saw Jacob Zuma become president South Africa’s economy has been on a steady downward spiral, with unemployment surging, the currency faltering and foreign investment shrinking. Most recently the country’s seen a ratings downgrade to junk status, following Zuma’s most recent cabinet reshuffle.

What minister Zulu and her ilk seem to forget is that there will be no economic transformation without an economy to transform and that the current ANC leadership’s actions have almost made sure that that future will be unattainable for the poorest of the poor.

In any case, the ruling party has had to, tie and again, remind Zuma and his allies, like Zulu, that taking land without compensation is neither government nor ANC policy.
