The United Nations high commissioner for refugees has hit out at Minister Peter Dutton’s suggestion that white South African farmers should receive “special attention” for migration to Australia, even though they face legal discrimination, farm attacks and in the near future land confiscation.
Ratwatte, the commissioner for refugees said: “The decision of the government to open its migration pathways to different categories of people is a sovereign decision but from the UNHCR perspective we do encourage that resettlement opportunities that are for refugees and humanitarian quotas, that are for deserving cases, should not be impacted by these decisions on migration.”
when asked if the people on Nauru, a detention centre in Papa New Guinea where illegal migrants are sent to once they reach Australia, were more deserving, Ratwatte said the “facts speak for themselves” and it was self-evident from the trauma and vulnerability of those on Nauru – more than 80% of who have been assessed as refugees after according to the U.N criteria – and that they are deserving of “prioritised solutions”.

On Tuesday seven backbench MPs highlighted the plight of white South African farmers in the Coalition party room, and the response from Dutton confirmed Australia could issue humanitarian visas even if they didn’t qualify as refugees according to the U.N definition.
The MPs also blasted critics who have labelled their push as bigoted and racist, accusing those on the “green left” of closing their eyes to persecution because of the colour of the farmers’ skin and pointed out people applying for protection did not need to meet the technical definition of a refugee.
